Years
ago, when Jake was a mere child, he went to New Orleans to play with
his high school band in a seemingly-endless Mardi Gras parade. Youth
being the marvelous thing it is, he marched those seven miles with no
problems and managed to soak in a lot of "Damn, I wanna come back here
when I'm old enough to drink" ideas. While cruising a record shop on
Canal Street, he discovered this album (without the horrible title
frames) and scooped it up. The recordings you will hear are from the
original Southland record - there is a new re-issue on CD that has
additional cuts, and if you're interested, everybody sells it. This goes hand-in-hand with the 1950's Club Jazz session, because the guys on this record were the cream of the crop of ofays (look it up) playing jazz in NOLA during the post-war period. Jake's good friend Charlie Suhor has a great book on these guys. |
